26th Annual Morongo Basin Orchid Festival

By Lisa Morgan

MARK YOUR CALENDARS to come and experience displays of beautiful live orchids and much, much more at the 26th Annual Morongo Basin Orchid Festival

The Orchid Festival showcases eighteen community non-profits who will be providing information and opportunities to volunteer with these organizations. 100% of the proceeds from orchid sales as well as food and beverage sales will be disbursed among these non-profit groups and to Yucca Valley Sunset Rotary community projects, by way of the Rotary Buck program. You get to decide which of your favorite charities will benefit from your purchases by using “Rotary Bucks”.

Don’t forget your camera! See orchid filled greenhouses and enjoy the thousands of orchids blooming in the desert oasis called Landers! You can learn how these flowers are produced, grown, and shipped throughout the world. See over 15,000 Venus Fly Traps and other carnivorous plants waiting for their next meal.

Is your orchid at home a champion? You can bring your own beautiful orchids to be judged! The Riverside/San Bernardino Orchid Society will be sponsoring an American Orchid Society Judged Show with the registration of orchid entries on Friday September 30th 2 – 4 PM, and again on Saturday morning from 9 – 10 AM. Judging will begin at 10:05 AM Saturday with ribbons being awarded at noon. Learn more about the judging rules at www.sunsetrotary.org.

Indulge your taste buds with the Yucca Valley Sunset Rotary’s Wine tasting, offering 6 tastings of different wines from around the globe. Glasses of wine are also available in the commemorative Orchid Festival glass.

Joshua Tree Brewery has developed a new orchid beer that will be offered for the first time at this year’s festival. The very popular Shari Baby Beer will also be available. You will be amazed with the flavor and smoothness of this beer. Shari baby beer is only available at the Orchid Festival and comes in a collector Shari Baby/25th Annual Festival pint glass. Joshua Tree Brewery will have a selection of additional craft beers for those who enjoy the suds.

Food, beverages, and entertainment will be plentiful at this year’s festival! The Boys and Girls Club of the High Desert will be hosting “The Sunset Grill” featuring their popular hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chips, and a variety of drinks available for purchase. Lovin’ Smoke, by Bruce’s Place, known for their smoked meats, is returning this year. Indulge in a rack of baby back ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, or brisket. Five Dollar Pizza will be offering an array of pizzas and pizza slices. Five Dollar Pizza is known for their tasty pizzas and for their generous support to the local community.

Enjoy the live music, Saturday, with the unique sounds of the Robbi Rob And. band, one of the best kept secrets of the desert music scene. They can be heard on the Neal Casal tribute album, Highway Butterfly, alongside Warren Hayes, Billy Strings and Marcus King. Billboard calls them a pioneer of world rock music. On Sunday, the Yucca Valley High School Jazz Band, who have been featured at the RCC Jazz Festival, will grace our festival stage.

Come out to have a good time while helping the community to raise funds for the charities in the Morongo Basin.
