The Joshua Tree National Park Art Exposition at the historic Oasis of Mara in Twentynine Palms, CA, presents a juried exhibition of art inspired by the park, plus an art exhibition catalog, artist awards, art activities, and more. JTNP Art Expo weekend events include art demonstrations for youth and adults, gallery tours, and an art market at the historic 29 Palms Art Gallery. Other activities include Park Ranger walks/talks at the Oasis of Mara and pottery classes at 29 Palms Creative Center. Also, that weekend is the annual “Weed Show” at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, located just down the street from the gallery.
In recognition of a long-standing tradition between artists and the national parks and specifically Joshua Tree’s impact on artists and visitors from around the globe, the Joshua Tree National Park Council for the Arts created an annual Art Exposition in 2013 — a juried art exhibition and celebration featuring art inspired by or depicting the unique natural beauty or cultural history of Joshua Tree National Park.

29 Palms Art Gallery
29 Palms Art Gallery is in a historic Twentynine Palms adobe building. Once home to western author Tom Hopkins, the 1936 adobe was established in 1964 as a gallery offering exhibitions of art for sale, youth and adult art classes and a gift shop full of southwestern gifts, jewelry and local artisans’ works.
81ST ANNUAL WEED SHOW
November 6, 2021 to November 7, 2021

LOCATION: Old Schoolhouse Museum
Time to start getting ready for the 2021 Twentynine Palms Weed Show! The Twentynine Palms Historical Society’s annual Weed Show, the community’s oldest and most unique tradition, is just around the corner. Organizers advise participants to begin preparing their entries now! This year’s 81st Annual Weed Show “What’s Next??” will be held Saturday and Sunday, November 6th and 7th in Founders Hall at the Old Schoolhouse Museum.
The annual event, which originated in the 1940s, is a desert version of the traditional judged flower show. Creative desert residents compete for the best composition using local dried plant material (weeds) and found objects in a variety of themed categories. One category includes using an arrangement of live plant material with museum-quality purple glass as an accessory.
Contenders compete for bragging rights and ribbons for first, second, and third place, and honorable mention. Plus, there are certificates for Judges’ Choice and the highly-coveted People’s Choice award.
The 2021 Weed Show committee selected “What’s Next??” as a nod to the “fun times” of the last 18 months (or so), and all 12 entry categories reflect the theme:

BASICS OF DRAWING
29 Palms Art Gallery November 13, 2021 to November 27, 2021 29 Palms Art Gallery
Hosted by the 29 Palms Art Gallery, the “Basics of Drawing” class introduces the fundamentals of drawing throughout three sessions. The first class will begin with understanding the tools and mediums used, including charcoal, pencils, and paper surfaces. Artist Mark Spangenberg will introduce students to blocking, enveloping in, capturing light and shadow, and focusing on form. Simple still lifes will include glass, chrome, and cloth. An introduction of some laws of perspective will increase students’ sense of space and observation. Participants will also try to convey the feeling of the objects. Together everyone will hone observation and create a discipline of eye and hand, so each student gains the skills required to express visual communication in any style. The class size of the “Basics of Drawing” is limited to 9 (minimum class of 4 required). Book your spot now.
