Boxo10x10 10th Anniversary Exhibition: Celebrating Contemporary Art – The New Frontier

Ten artists who have participated in residencies at BoxoPROJECTS over the past ten years are featured in Boxo10x10, a 10th anniversary exhibition and celebration of exploring contemporary art at the new frontier. The exhibition and public programs run from November 19 through December 31, 2022.

The 10-year milestone offers a moment to reflect, celebrate, and look ahead. The residency, which launched in 2012 with Gosia Wlodarczak’s Frost Drawing for Joshua Tree, provides artists with an inspirational space outside their everyday context as well as a welcoming local community of fellow artists, subject experts, and independent thinkers. It offers an immersive experience to deepen knowledge about the area, encourages cultural exchange in the Joshua Tree and wider Morongo Basin communities, and provides a platform for public programs that share insights and educate audiences about their own regional, national, and global cultural experiences.

From Our Partners

To date, Boxo has hosted and presented forty-six residencies, two visiting artists, one studio artist, fifteen exhibitions, and three editions of the Joshua Treenial.

For Boxo10x10, artists Eli Hirtle, Heather L. Johnson, and Jim Toia return to Joshua Tree to create installations that advance their residency projects. Kelly Berg and Ben Cuevas will present work updated or completed since their time on site, while Megan Evans, William Lamson, and Ana Sanchez-Colberg reprise aspects of their projects from afar. Caroline Partamian and Ethan Primason, who settled in the area following their residency, will produce a sound installation and performance at the Integratron.

Boxo10x10 will be complemented by a series of programs that will take place on site and in the region over the six-week period. These will include an artist panel, a community slideshow, lectures, and musical performances. This series kicks off with an opening reception and artist panel on Saturday November 19, 2022, followed by sound performances at The Integratron that evening. Mark your calendars, full details will be announced soon.

Though the exhibition reflects our program through the lens of these artists, all past participants have left their traces and are recognized. Several artists from the residency, and the Joshua Treenial, are represented by their long-term installations on the land and all have contributed to the energy and impact of the program.

We are very grateful to all past and present participants as well as to the generous supporters who help make the program possible.
