Once Upon a Needle: How Erin Campbell’s Retro Storybook Collection Brings Fairytales to Life

By Lisa Lynn Morgan | Joshua Tree Voice

By the time most of us were learning to tie our shoes, Landers resident, Erin Campbell, was threading her first sewing needle. At just five years old, she already had a sketchbook by her side, a sewing kit within reach, and a mind swirling with visions pulled straight from her favorite childhood tales.

Her earliest inspiration didn’t come from fashion runways or glossy magazines—it came from the spinning magic of a tiny record player. Campbell remembers placing the needle down on her treasured storybook records—Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Little Bo Peep—and being utterly entranced. “I would just sit there, staring at the artwork on the covers,” she recalls. “I was obsessed with the drawings and the colors. I imagined myself twirling in those dresses, feeling like Cinderella.”

She didn’t just dream about them—she drew them, filling pages with puffed sleeves, ruffles, and swirling skirts the size of clouds. Those sketches became seeds, planted deep, waiting for the right moment to bloom.

That moment is now.

The Retro Storybook Collection, Campbell’s newest line under her brand Lover Dovers, is a love letter to those childhood imaginings. Handmade in California, each piece is a vibrant nod to the 1950s—complete with puff sleeves, cheerful color palettes, and the kind of ruffles that seem made for dancing in the kitchen. Designs span a fairytale kingdom of icons: Mother Goose, Goldilocks, Miss Muffet, and more. They’re part costume, part nostalgia, and all joy.

While children adore them, Campbell’s creations are for anyone who still believes in “once upon a time.” “Fairytales are for everyone,” she insists. “I’m all about color. Color makes me happy, and I want my customers to feel that same joy when they wear my designs.”

The launch of the Retro Storybook Collection isn’t just a business milestone—it’s the closing of a circle. A little girl once dreamed of ruffled dresses and storybook adventures. Now, decades later, she’s sewing those dreams into reality, stitch by stitch, for anyone who wants to step into the pages of their own fairytale.

The collection debuted August 14 at LoverDovers.com. But in truth, it’s been in the making since a five-year-old girl first sat down with a needle, some thread, and a head full of wonder.
