ABOUT THE 2023 JOSHUAS NOMINEES

Here are your 2023 Joshuas Honors Nominees – Please Vote Today!

The Joshuas are days away! On October 29th, our creative, loving community will gather to see and hear a collection of local talent as we celebrate the contributors voted for here. Please raise your voice for the people who have touched your life the most with their never-ending investment to the Morongo Basin through music, art, culture, and ecology, by VOTING TODAY.

HOW NOMINEES ARE CHOSEN: A blank ballot was sent to 650 people that have been either featured in or contributed to Joshua Tree Voice over the last two years. They were given a list of the categories and nothing else. They were not prompted with names to choose from and unable to vote for themselves. Joshua Tree Voice (Owners, Raymond Rodriguez and Lisa Lynn Morgan) tallied the three individuals/groups in each category that received the most nominations. There are some categories that have more than three nominees because several nominees tied for that third spot.

Previous honorees were not eligible to be nominated in the same category they received a Joshua for last year, allowing other worthy nominees to have an opportunity to be celebrated. They remain eligible in all other categories.

WHY A PUBLIC VOTE: Putting the nominees out to the general public can be viewed as a popularity contest, in some ways is. The real honor is in the nomination itself. Names were typed/written down on a blank line by peers and members of the community when asked, “Who do you think has shown an outstanding effort in this category?” If you’ve been nominated, they thought of you!

Putting it to a public vote allows our community to have a voice in the process, and most times, makes them more aware of all the contributions being made in their community. All of these categories require support from the community, and we hope to help inspire it.

HONORS VS AWARDS: It is imperative to Joshua Tree Voice that we use proper language. Words matter. We try to avoid words like “best, “winner,” or “award.” We do not choose the word “best,” which could insinuate that other efforts have less value, which is certainly not the case. The word “winner” indicates that there’s a loser when there are none. The word “award” suggests that there is some kind of contest with winners and losers. There is no competition. There are no losers. Every contribution matters. Every voice matters. Everyone working in these areas are winners, whether recognized or not.

THE PURPOSE OF THE JOSHUAS: As with Joshua Tree Voice, we want to provide a platform for the world to see what lies at the heart of the greater Joshua Tree Area. Supporting our local artists and conservationists is at the core of Joshua Tree Voice. Often, those working in these categories, while rewarding, can also be exhausting financially, emotionally, and mentally, and this gives us all an opportunity to say, “We see you. We hear you. We thank you!”

It also helps Joshua Tree Voice learn about contributions to our community we might not be aware of and may support in the future.

And who doesn’t love an awesome party?

The Joshuas allow us to dress up a bit and come together as we literally shine a spotlight on the things, we love about each other.

THOSE NOT MENTIONED: If you or a loved one has not been listed under the nominations, please understand that it is in no way a reflection on you or your efforts. We are entering our third season of publication whose reach is growing every day. Our circle of nominees represents a very tiny portion of this huge community. With your help, we will continually work hard at broadening our reach and awareness. This is simply our best effort today. Next year’s effort will be even greater. If you have any questions or input, please email us at info@joshuatreevoice.com, and please get your tickets to the 2nd Annual Joshuas Honors Gala at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center October 29th, 5 pm.

Congratulations to all our nominees and a huge thank you to all those who participate. We’ll be announcing our entertainment line up for our gala soon! Stay tuned!
